The Joy of Jello

Hiya Blogland!! Everyone having a wonderful week?? We are MELTING here in Western Maryland!! As are our friends in Britain!!  It’s been in the 90’s with the humidity in the 90’s also giving us heat indexes of 105-115. RIDICULOUS!! We’ve been spending our time indoors as much as possible trying to stay cool!

I picked up some vintage molds this weekend and had a wild hair this week to make some tomato aspic as a nice cooling salad. Off I went delving into my vintage cookbooks!! Wow did the past generations LOVE their molded and congealed salads!! There are some truly tragic concoctions out there. I adore the lurid colors and such in the old ads and recipes. I just had to share some of these lovely dishes with you. Get out your Pepto-bismal!!

1. I'd be put off my feed if i was presented that pink mess. 2. Three words: Potato. Salad. Jello.

Well they LOOK pretty!!

Cabbage in jello??

Cabbage in jello??

1. The curdled stuff in the bottom layer is rather..gross. 2. Tuna and Jello are 2 words that should not be in the same sentence.

This first outfit is my outfit for Jane@Flight Platform Living’s  Shiny T Tuesday. This weeks theme is ____________ on ______________. As miserable hot as it’s been I was considering “Clothes ON Body”!!!  however, I pulled out a fav maxi. I’m going with “Bright Beading ON Tribal Print”. This maxi was a bargain for under $20 at Walmart. Add a couple of thrifted bangles and some thongs and I’m good to go!

This week Anne of Spy Girl’s 52 Pick-me-up Challenge is Go with the Flow. Considering our weather I’ve only wanted to wear loose, drapey, flowy stuff!!!  I designed made this maxi dress from this awesome cotton knit fabric I got on clearance. I love how painterly and abstract the print is–and the colors are just so cool!!  It was easy and breezy to wear–just added some black hoops, thrifted bangles and black sandals! And I’ve been photobombed again!!

002

This outfit could also go with SpyGirls Challenge. The thrifted skirt is swirly and flowy and the top has nice drapy ruffles that hide stuff. Again I just added some thrifted bangles and a pin I made. I kept cool and comfortable all day! Gracie had a toy cat mouse she was trying to get me to play with her with.

006

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!!! I’ve got indoor activities planned due to the heat (Fibro makes me super-sensitive to heat) Got 2 dresses to finish up and some tomato aspic to make! I’ll be back Sunday to share some really weird food products!

Some of those salads are colorful and that’s all I will say. ;-). Cool (both comfort-wise and style-wise) dresses. It’s been miserably hot here, even hotter than Texas or Florida on some days. (That’s where the girls live). Love that little doll baby of yours. How does Mr Bill fare with the hot steamy days?

    • Thanks Donna–MrBill is taking it easy. We don’t let him out in the heat much and have curtailed any waddles around the block in the evening.

Love the colours! Maxi dresses are so cool with out exposing more than is needed. I love them. I’ve been living in teeshirts and jersy maxi skirts this week.

Jello. Right now, it’s a necessity at my house. I have to admit those salads always scared me. I remember the odd one still appearing at potlucks in the 70s!

Now in that recipe collection of yours is there a chiffon cake recipe using jello? I had it in strawberry once, around 1968 and loved it. I remember it vividly because I couldn’t get over the fact that jello was in a cake! But nobody has the recipe.

Happy to see the new furkid seems to appreciate you.

    • I’ll keep my eye out for that recipe!!   Maxis keep you cool and no one can see you haven’t shaved!

Oh my god, those jello salads are frightening! My grandmother had the copper mold for the curved fish one! I remember it! And I’m pretty sure that potato salad one at the top is actually ICED with mayonnaise. Gross.

Love your purple swirly dress! Those are some of my very favourite colours! You look gorgeous – I hope the weather gets better/cooler for you soon. Sending you West Coast breezes.

    • I went back and checked – it IS iced in mayo!!! Barf!!!!

  5. My mother also had the curved fish one, but I’m not sure she ever used it. I loved any red Jello with fruit in it, but the green and yellow ones – no, thank you! And Jello potato salad?!?!? Might as well make Jello vegetable soup.

Love your loosey drapey dresses – I need me some more of those. Although our heat is nothing compared to yours. Keep a nice cool gin & tonic handy!

    • Ugh–fish jello makes my skin crawl!!

You look gorgeous in all three of your maxis. If I bumped into you in the dtreet I’d be all over you like a rash – colourful and cool and totally fabulous – unlike the food! Thank goodness there’s no revival in all that lurid slime – us vegetarians would waste away as it’s all gelatine coated! xxx

    • Thanks!! I found some vegetarian gelatin mix at the Health food store to try out. ONLY fruits and veg–I can not imagine the texture of gelatinized FISH!!

  9. I’m a really good cook, but the 2 thing I can not make are rice krispy treats and anything made of gelatine……..thank god!!!!!!!!! That stuff is a horror! It looks more like “science project” than tasty treat.

I try to get all my outside fun, walking and gardening , done by 9am. It’s like damp Hell out there.

    • It’s so bad here it’s been a swamp at 6am!!

I’m always so jealous when you just “whip up a dress” with some fabric you found. It looks amazing and I love the colours and pattern.

I just hated those salads as a kid and I still hate them today. Reminded me of what I thought brains would look and taste like. Gross. Just gross.

    bisous

Oh Jello! Sorry to be a WASPy snob, but I had a good chuckle when I had Sunday supper with a family in Michigan more than 20 years ago and the Jello dish (with berries and marshmallows) was called the salad.

I’d say it’s a triple play of drapiness! Stay cool (and mellow)! Thanks for linking up with 52 Pick-me-up.

    • Anne–go to a church social to see the array of molded lurid goodness!!

  14. I’m gonna be frank. Some of those jello recipes made my stomach go whoopsy 😮

On the other hand, you are looking lovelier and lovelier than ever. Maxis are becoming my fave; I’ve been purchasing a few more secondhand or on clearance to be my hospital wear. I’m always so cold, and sometimes when you get to curl up for a nap, it’s nice to have on a maxi dress or skirt that feels like jammies.

    Love ya,
    Lynne

    • Maxi skirts are like the best ever!! Comfort and you don’t have to shave your legs!

I’m dying to know which jello-style dish you chose to make … the B&W maxi is simply fab darling! I cannot bear to have clothes touching my body in the humidity and maxis are perfect for such weather. Stay cool:) xoxoxoxo

    • If I could go naked I would–but then I’d be arrested and scare small children and pets!

Eek, just tried to post a comment and was told off by WordPress for “posting comments too quickly”! What’s that all about?
Anyway, I was saying no to Jello and all the crazily coloured food, I’m afraid!
But a huge YES to your fantastic outfits, especially the tribal dress and the colourful maxi.
We’ve lost the sunshine here today – hope you can keep cool this weekend, Tamera! xxxx

    • One more reason to dump WordPress–it gives me fits posting on others blogs!

I want to try those Jello dishes, although they make me feel rather queasy, I’d definitely have half a spoonful. You look utterly stunning in the second dress, really lovely! Such a great pattern, it makes me think of fireworks and feathers xxxx
ps: also love that black and white one!!
